Rule Of The Bone #7

Chapter 19 was a big surprise for me. I didn't expect IMan to die because it was nearing the end of the book and Chappie seemed to finally have peace in his life living amongst the rastas. This event was typical for Chappie because people that he cares about or care about him always end up leaving him in one way or another. His mom, his dad, Russ, Bruce, Sister Rose, and IMan all left him and those were all the people he cared about. It's possible that in Chappie's last lifetime he could've been a serial killer and this could be what happens when you live a bad life before.

Man's inhumanity to man is one of the sad things about the world. Genocide and other forms of inhuman acts happen every day. In the novel, Chappie's stepdad Ken shows inhumanity by raping Chappie and driving him away from his own mother. Basically leaving him to die. It's hard to imagine anyone that would try so hard to get a child away from the only person that cared for him, his mother. Humans can act very selfishly and it's depressing to know that people don't care about how other people feel about anything.

The person responsible for IMan's death is Ken. He was the root of Chappie's journey to Jamaica. If Chappie would've never left home, he never would've met IMan and even if IMan moved to Jamaica he wouldn't have been in Doc's spaceship having sex with Evening Star. It had to have been Doc that ordered Jason to kill IMan.

Chappie's Birthday

Chappie's birthday was not what he was expecting at all. He was expecting a normal birthday party revolving around him and people celebrating him with cake and presents. Instead, he just experienced a normal day on the mothership of Doc. The only things that resembled a birthday party were a few balloons and the banner that said happy birthday. Bone isn't expecting too much because he's only a boy expecting to be recognized on his birthday. Evening Star and Doc are just looking for an excuse to throw a party. They're just using Chappie as an excuse and it's very selfish of them.

Evening Star is just a party animal that likes to have sex with many guys. She doesn't really care about Chappie and she just uses Doc to have resources. Doc is already kind of a bad person and he is exposing his son to many bad things. You can tell he also doesn't care about Chappie and he's just trying to party. He sells drugs and is putting a bad influence on Chappie. Very bad parenting by Doc

Rule Of The Bone #5

Rule of the Bone is considered a coming of age novel because it shows the main character Chappie having to make mature decisions for the well being of his life. He is already on his own at such a young age and he has really no one to guide him in the right direction. He has to do it himself.

"Just one. Because I wanted to kill him. I have never wanted anything in my life as much as I wanted to kill my stepfather at that moment."

Chappie finally wanted to stand up for himself because he was tired of letting his stepdad Ken take advantage of him. He didn't actually kill him but he's starting to show that he's not gonna take anything from him anymore.

"That's right, choose which one of us you want. Mom, choose one or the other. Ken or me. Let's get serious."

Chappie is telling his mom to make a decision between him and Ken. He knows that there's the possibility that his mom could pick Ken and he will feel abandoned and unloved by his own mother. He is willing to take that risk because he knows he is ready to live on his own if he has to. This shows a lot of maturity to give his mom an ultimatum.

A coming of age time for me was when I decided to play football. I thought I was just gonna be a soccer player in high school and I would never play. I would've felt like a coward if I chose not to play because I knew there was a chance i could be good. When I decided to play I felt very confident in myself.

Another coming of age time for me was when my friends were trying to peer pressure me into doing certain drugs and I chose not to. I could've easily done them because it didn't take any skill to take them or anything but I knew what it would do to me and I decided not to. I felt very good after because I saw how my friends were acting after they took them and they were very annoying and I was happy to not be like that.


"I love my mom, I really do, despite everything."

Even though Chappie's mom abandoned him and left him out in the cold so many times, he still loves her which takes a lot of maturity to say after it seems like his mom doesn't even care about him.

Rule of the Bone #4

The Bong Brothers were scary people. When Chappie lived with them it was terrible for him. They lived in a bus and they rarely ever had food and their life was not of any quality. Chappie also lived with I-Man in the same bus BUT, it was much better in every aspect of life. They had much better food and they lived a much higher quality of life. IMAN seems like a very nice guy. He's very at peace with everything around him and he is a good person for Chappie to be around.

Jamaica started when the Arawak Indians migrated from South America in 650 AD. The Spanish came and enslaved the Arawak. The British took Jamaica from the Spanish. The Spanish let their slaves go and armed them so the British wouldn't be able to enslave them. Sugar cane was the biggest money making industry in Jamaica but after 1938 they had other products and tourism became a big industry. They won independence from England in 1962 and became the crown jewel of the cAriBbeAn.

Halie Selassie- He was basically the god of the Rastafari Movement
Rastafarinism- Religious movement amongst Jamaicans in which Halie Sellasie is the messiah and Africa is the promise land.
Bob Marley- Reggae artist that highly promoted the rastafari life style all over the world.
Malcolm X- Black radicalist that promoted the black panthers party and pushed for the dominance of the Black man.
